Envy Nails, a nail salon chain with 25 locations in Manhattan, Queens, and the Bronx, has been hit with multiple violations and fines, as announced by New York Attorney General Letitia James’ office. The chain had for years improperly classified the over 90% foreign-born workers as independent contractors, allowing Envy to circumvent minimum wage, overtime, and workers’ compensation laws. The chain must now pay out $300,000 to over 100 current and former employees. Additionally, the chain owes at least $90,000 in taxes and penalties, and one location, Nails 181, has pleaded guilty to third degree larceny and must pay over $275,000.
