Last year, 1,500 part-time professors at The New School went on strike for a month, looking to have issues such as obtaining an adequate health-care plan addressed. Now, 900 student workers, taking their cue from that action, have organized as New Student Workers Union. The NSWU has filed with the NLRB, hoping to join UAW Local 7902, which already represents several thousand employees at the university. Zoe Carey, president of Local 7902, says that while The New School has a progressive legacy, it is not carrying out its policies towards workers in living up to its history.
