Well-known actress, writer and filmmaker Justine Bateman, who served as a union advisor on AI, is fuming about the recent tentative contract reached between SAG-AFTRA and studios and streaming companies. Her main concern is that human beings, i.e. actors, will be replaced by generative AI. “I’m very disappointed that the SAG leadership and committee did not take my guidance on the [AI] issues,” she said. She claims that in the contract, studios and streamers are granted the right to use “Synthetic Performers” or “AI Objects” resembling humans and replacing human actors. However, although the details of the contract have not been released, others counter her concerns, saying provisions include consent and compensation for those who choose to have their images used in those ways.
