In the Tesla facility in Fremont, California, ugly racism at its worst has been the norm for at least 8.5 years, according to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). Throughout their day, workers of color have repeatedly been called the “N” word. They have been told they are “shiftless” and “lazy”, long-standing examples of racial stereotyping; some of the other terms directed at them have been “boy” and “monkey.” The factory is covered with graffiti of nooses, swastikas, and references to the KKK. White supervisors and management not only did not try to put a stop to this, they joined in, and punished those workers who objected. Now, after trying to negotiate with Elon Musk for over a year to put a stop to this without success, the EEOC, on Sept. 28, brought a lawsuit against the company for violating Black workers’ civil rights under Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act.
