In a move which must have put hope into the hearts of many exploited workers, District Attorney Alvin Bragg announced on Feb. 16 a new initiative: the Worker Protection Unit. The focus of the Unit is to investigate and prosecute wage theft. That crime is endemic throughout the borough of Manhattan and affects workers in many professions. The city’s immigrant and non-English-speaking workforce is often hit the hardest, and they work in professions such as construction, home health care agencies, fast food chains, hotels, janitorial services, and many more. Bragg says the most important aspect of this new creation is getting their hard-earned money back to those who have been the victims of this crime.
