“Our Voice, Our Ballot, Our Future” was the theme for the 2024 AFL-CIO Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Civil and Human Rights Conference. It took place this year in Montgomery, Alabama, a setting decades ago for a historic moment where the civil rights leader spoke about justice and the importance of the labor movement moving forward. Speakers at the conference included AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler and AFL-CIO Secretary-Treasurer Fred Redmond, both of whom underscored the significance of the upcoming election, and asked union members to donate their work and energy for the fight ahead. Shuler also spoke about the conflict between those “who are determined to drag us backward,” adding, “workers are doing the opposite – surging forward and challenging inequity across the country.”
