Mirroring a union-busting tactic used around the U.S., and in New York City, where, for example, workers at a Trader Joe’s wine shop arrived only to find it closed, just as the employees were attempting to unionize, two businesses in Washington, D.C., and Portland, Ore., have done the same. In D.C., two popular cafes were shuttered, and two Montessori pre-schools in Oregon were shut when bosses learned about union organizing drives. The shutdowns happened in a matter of hours in both cases, and the workers, mostly young, female, and people of color, were left high and dry. It’s another example of how these folks are exploited by the corporate class, and underpaid, and when they try to change their circumstances, their effort is thwarted.
