Washington, D.C. – “Our members work and raise their families in Washington, D.C., and AFGE believes that everyone deserves to feel safe where they live. However, at a time when D.C. is experiencing a 30-year low in violent crime – due to the dedication of its government workers – sending in the National Guard and federalizing the Metropolitan Police Department is a gross overreaction and overreach, and a dangerous one at that.
“Let’s not forget the blatant hypocrisy of this move either. Just four years ago, President Trump refused to deploy the National Guard when a riot he incited took over our U.S. Capitol, threatening the lives of lawmakers and law enforcement at an unprecedented scale.
“What we’re seeing today in D.C. is yet another alarming sign of Trump’s willingness to jump at any chance to throw aside our democratic systems in favor of fear-based control – whether over D.C. residents or the country at large.
“AFGE will continue to stand with our thousands of D.C. union members and ensure they know they still have a voice, no matter the intimidation tactics used.”
