Staff members at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York voted in a National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) election on whether to unionize with UAW Local 2110. According to the reported tally, 542 ballots were cast in favor of union representation and 172 against, representing approximately 76% support among counted votes.
Ballots from approximately 100 additional employees were challenged by the museum and remain sealed. The eligibility of those positions is expected to be determined through an arbitration process after the NLRB completes the certification process.
Employees involved in the effort had been discussing union representation for several years. Organizers cited issues such as job security, compensation, and workplace policies as reasons for seeking a union.
The proposed bargaining unit includes staff from multiple departments, such as curatorial, conservation, library, retail, visitor services, development, archival, digital, and information technology roles.
UAW Local 2110 represents employees at a number of cultural institutions in the United States. If the union is certified, the parties would proceed to collective bargaining negotiations.
