State lawmakers recently passed legislation that would require the MTA to staff a conductor on every subway with more than two cars. Although most New York City subway lines have both, the MTA uses its “One-Person Train Operation” on a few shuttle lines, including the Franklin Avenue shuttle in Brooklyn. The G and M trains operate without a conductor on weekend and late-night service. The legislation, sponsored by state Senator Kevin Parker and Assembly Member Monique Chandler-Waterman, both of them Brooklyn legislators, states that a conductor should be onboard all trains in order to “maintain an acceptable standard of safety for passengers.” Transport Workers Union Local 100, which represents 44,000 transit workers, pushed for the bill, which must still be signed into law by Governor Hochul.
