99.6% of nurses at NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital voted on May 18 to authorize a strike. The approximately 1,250 nurses have been working without a contract since it expired on April 30. Negotiations had been ongoing for months. The issue that looms largest for the workers, members of the New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA) is that of staffing cuts. Methodist is trying to cut care in crucial areas such as Labor and Delivery, Mother-Baby, and Chemotherapy Infusion, among other units.
