It can only be described as cruel and unusual punishment: New York City Transit workers who helped in the cleanup and recovery on the World Trade Center pile after the 9/11 attacks, and who are suffering related illnesses, have still not received the three-quarters disability pension benefits they were promised years ago. Other civil service workers who were at the site and became ill received them, while these essential workers have had to continue to contend with promises from politicians that have gone nowhere for years. These are very serious diseases, and one worker, among many, many others at the site with the same or similar conditions, has contracted lung disease, as well as other ailments. Others have already passed. Essentially, it’s about dollars for the city, not help for those who came to work after the tragedy struck.
