On November 1st, HEART 9/11 deployed its Rapid Response Team to Jamaica in response to the devastation caused by Hurricane Melissa. The teams, comprised of highly skilled NYC Building Trades members, are providing vital relief and recovery assistance in hard-hit areas, such as Mandeville, St. Elizabeth, and Black River, where families have experienced devastating losses. Volunteers are offering hope, dignity, and the possibility of rebuilding lives.
The impact of HEART 9/11’s support is being felt deeply across Jamaica’s communities. An 89-year-old veteran and lifelong farmer expressed his restored sense of hope, sharing, “I am thanking them so much that they can look at a single person like me, an ordinary Jamaican, and help me so well.” He added, “I know they will be going to other people to help that had it worse than me.” His words capture the gratitude and hope shared by many who are witnessing their communities being rebuilt one step at a time through volunteerism.
His relief, like many others, serves as a powerful reminder of the devastation that comes from losing one’s home. In the wake of disaster, even the simple act of repairing a roof can change someone’s life, bringing safety and a sense of hope back that once felt out of reach. If you are unable to volunteer, you can still make a meaningful impact. Your donation helps keep recovery efforts moving by placing tools in the hands of skilled volunteers, materials on damaged homes, and hope back into communities throughout Jamaica.
