New York, NY – Nicholas Moore, Apprentice for Local 46 Metallic Lathers, grew up surrounded by family members in unions. Now, he himself is almost at the end of his four-year apprentice program, during which, like most apprentices, he has had the opportunity to ply his hand at the trade. Moore interviewed with LaborPress, and we learned more about his background, where he is working now, and what he values most about the trade so far.

LP: How old are you and where did you grow up?

NM: I am 24 years old and grew up in New Milford, New Jersey.

LP: What got you interested in the trade? Had you thought about other careers?

NM: Growing up I had many family members working in trades which had influenced me into joining the union. While my work history is diverse, I have always found a passion in doing trade work.

LP: What type of work does your Local provide?

NM: I am an apprentice for Local 46 Metallic Lathers which involves installing rebar.

LP: Was it difficult qualifying for the apprentice program? What was involved?

NM: While there were a lot of steps within the program, some required physical assessments as well as being put in simulated situations to test our body’s physicality, and lastly an interview process for qualifying.

LP: What year are you in, and when will you graduate?

NM: I started in 2020. Currently, I am in my last year as a 4th year apprentice and will graduate by the end of this year.

LP: What job are you currently working on?

NM: I am currently working with the company Park Ave in Hunter’s Point, Queens.

LP: What is your favorite aspect of your work?

NM: My favorite aspects are my coworkers and the community built within the local. Some aspects of our work are physically demanding and having a crew of people around you makes the days easier.

LP: What does being in your union mean to you? How does it support you?

NM: Being in the union means being able to support my family and the ones I love. I have met many different amazing people over time and have gained many new friends and connections that will stick with me for a lifetime.

LP: What is your reaction to being named Outstanding Apprentice of the Year?

NM: I was very shocked and humbled by the award. I strive to work hard and master my craft every day. Working with many incredible men and women in my trade, it is truly an honor to be selected.
