A huge blast emanated from the Thiokol Chemical plant in Woodbine, Georgia. The explosion killed 30 workers, most of them Black women. 50 more were injured. It is considered one of the worst industrial disasters, along with the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire, and the West Fertilizer Plant explosion. The tragedy triggered multiple changes: among others, new laws that compensate victims, first responder protocol, and, three months from the date, the creation of OSHA.
