In 2023, the “Stand Off Strike”, which pitted the Big Three: Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis, against the UAW, ended with significant wins for the powerful union against each of the American automobile manufacturers. Now, however, new conflicts are brewing. Stellantis has been laying off workers, or threatening new layoffs, blaming the move on auto tariffs. Meanwhile, however, the company is funneling billions into stock buybacks and dividends for its shareholders. Instead, they could reopen plants, lower vehicle prices, and regain market share, resulting in thousands of laid-off workers returning.
