The Trump administration’s brutal crackdown on workers in farms, hotels, and restaurants, in order to fulfill his promise of, as he promised in his Truth Social online forum, instituting the “single largest Mass Deportation Program in History.” But then there was a reprieve, which only lasted four days, and which is now lifted. Most of the targeted areas were in Democratic-run large cities. In the continuing stream of lies and invective’s characterizing the Department of Homeland Security, Tricia McLaughlin, the assistant secretary, said, ““There will be no safe spaces for industries who harbor violent criminals or purposely try to undermine Ice’s efforts.” The economic fallout from the arrests and deportations without due process has had major ramifications for the US economy, as undocumented immigrants make up 4.6% of the US workforce. Such workers have been an enormous windfall for those who employ these non-unionized, underpaid workers, who labor without safety precautions in dangerous conditions, such as meatpacking plants.
