More slashing of federal workers has come to the Social Security Administration, one of the most important, if not the most important, agencies in America, providing benefits to 73 million people. Scores of employees in New York City, Westchester and Long Island, now under the gun from the Trump administration, have resigned, as measures designed to demoralize and push them out of their jobs, even to the point of illegally violating contract agreements, go forward. According to Edwin Osorio, president of Local 3369 of the American Federation of Government Employees, the workers “are facing myriad issues. We’re being set up for failure.” Osorio, New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, Representative Dan Goldman, DC 37’s Henry Garrido, labor leaders and advocates for seniors gathered in lower Manhattan on Tuesday, April 22, to draw attention to their contention that the Trump administration is secretly trying to eviscerate the agency. Under the guise of expunging fraud, Trump and DOGE are finding ways that point to the eventual elimination or huge reduction of access to benefits for those who most need them: the poor, elderly, disabled, veterans, and millions of Americans who have earned the right to dignity.
