Karen Juanita Carrillo at The New York Amsterdam News reports the Trump Administration has agreed to get involved in contract negotiations between five Unions that represent Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) Workers and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), temporarily averting a potential Strike.
A planned work stoppage by 3,700 LIRR Employees, which was to have begun last week, has been halted. LIRR service continues uninterrupted. The calls for Federal intervention came at the Unions’ request. Under the Railway Labor Act, the Union Coalition has the right to ask the President to appoint a Presidential Emergency Board (PEB) to investigate disputes between Rail Carriers and Unions – and recommend solutions.
Trump established a PEB to help negotiate the contract dispute between the MTA and the Unions: The Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen; The Brotherhood of Railroad Signalmen; The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers; the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers; and the Transportation Communications Union. The Board is mandated to issue a report on the negotiations to Trump within 30 days. The action prevents a walk-out Strike until May 2026.
