The Trump Administration has dismantled the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service (FMCS), an independent federal agency that is crucial to the federal government’s labor relations infrastructure. Among other actions the Administration has taken is firing mediators and staff, and closing field offices across the country. FMCS helps resolve contract negotiations between workers and employers, generating hundreds of millions of dollars each year. Liz Shuler, AFL-CIO President, called the assault on the FMCS “illegal, cruel and wrong-headed,” and affiliated unions are part of the legal challenge now going forward.
