Sean Astin was elected with 79.25% of the vote to succeed Fran Drescher as SAG-AFTRA President for a two-year term. Michelle Hurd also won and was voted in as secretary-treasurer with 64.77% of the vote. About 17% of SAG-AFTRA’s 117,000+ eligible members submitted ballots in this year’s national election.
Actor Sean Astin was known for his roles in The Lord of the Rings, Stranger Things, and Rudy. Actor Astin’s mother, the late Academy Award-winning actress Patty Duke, had served as Screen Actors Guild President from 1985 to 1988. His father stared in The Addams Family.
SAG-AFTRA represents approximately 160,000 members including actors, announcers, broadcast journalists, dancers, and recording artists.
