New York, NY – Stuck Nation Radio continues to celebrate Women’s History Month on WBAI with conversations with women who are making a difference and helping to revive the American labor movement.

Acting FDNY Commissioner Laura Kavanagh is seen here with Acting Chief of Department John Hodgens and members of NYC’s clergy during this year’s Saint Patrick’s Day Parade on Fifth Ave in Manhattan..

In this week’s edition, I interviewed acting FDNY Fire Commissioner Laura Kavanagh, the first woman to lead that department. Topics covered include the FDNY’s long standing wage and benefit gap between firefighters, who are mostly white males, and FDNY EMS workers, who are largely female and people of color. Kavanagh also offers her insights on why the FDNY has lagged behind the NYPD when it comes to racial diversity.

How do we move the needle for gender pay equity in City Hall, Albany and Washington D.C.? In the second part of this week’s edition, I talked to both New York City Council Member Carmen de la Rosa, chair of the City Council’s Civil Service and Labor Committee, and Beverly Neufeld, president of PowHer New York. Neufeld and de la Rosa describe their multifaceted strategy to close the gender pay gap for women while at the same time closing the opportunity gap that persists for women in well-compensated sectors like the building trades and construction.

  1. Hennelly’s programs on women in the labor movement are a crucial addition to the discourse on women’s equality. The US labor movment is waking up to the new depressing low of worker’s opportunities and rights. That is a most exciting possibility for justice in America. Bravo to Hennelly for highlighting it.
