Life Insurers Help Deliver Union Benefits

For union members, access to comprehensive benefits is more than an aspiration — it’s a reality. Life insurers specialize in providing certainty for members and their families, turning negotiated benefits into tangible support. These benefits are a cornerstone of union membership, ensuring members are better protected when life brings unexpected challenges.

Today,  87% of union members have access to life insurance compared to 58% of nonunion members. Life insurance companies help keep the promise secured by your union by paying out 99% of claims and working proactively to locate beneficiaries who may not even know a policy exists.

But life insurers deliver more than life insurance to policyholders, including union members. They also pay out billions in benefits to all policyholders, including members. This includes $10 billion to cover long-term care costs, $8.6 billion in paid leave benefits to help policyholders take time off to care for a sick child or family member, and $20.8 billion in disability income payments to those who experience an unexpected illness or injury. Life insurers also deliver supplemental benefits that provide an added layer of protection for unexpected expenses not covered by major medical insurance and complete the puzzle with dental and vision coverage.

We know the workplace is evolving and your needs are changing. Life insurers and unions advocate for stronger financial security and expanded benefits. From caregiving and medical leave to retirement planning, worker benefits help families, communities, and America’s economy succeed.
