Workers employed at the International Rescue Committee and represented by the Office and Professional Employees International Union were joined by Members of OPEIU Local 153 last week during a rally that was held outside the organization’s U.S. Headquarters in New York City as part of a three-day marathon bargaining session.
Since 2023, 13 IRC Program Offices across the U.S. have Unionized with OPEIU. The Workers, who dedicate themselves to serving people seeking refuge and a better life, organized because they believe in IRC’s mission and want to carry it out with the stability, security, and dignity they provide to their clients every day. They were joined at the rally by supporters from across the New York City Labor Movement, who stood in solidarity with their call for a fair contract.
While IRC’s top executives collectively earn nearly $5 million, many Front-Line Staff struggle to make ends meet and even take second jobs. At a time when funding for refugee services faces major Federal threats, the IRC Workers are emphasizing the urgent need for meaningful layoff protections, fair wages and workplace improvements.
They called on the community to stand with them in their fight for a first contract that reflects the values of the organization.
