In the ongoing battle to preserve the health insurance for city retirees that was promised to them decades ago, traditional Medicare, they have had to contend with politicians and unions who, like the Adams administration, is pushing to shift them to Medicare Advantage. It has been proven that Medicare Advantage is inferior to traditional Medicare, and the motive behind the shift is what the Adams administration is saying would save the city $600 million a year. Now, the mayoral race is in the midst of the fight, with candidates weighing the odds of winning more or less votes depending on what position they take on the matter. Queens Assemblymember Zohran Mamdani;s website has quietly added a pledge to “reject Medicare Advantage,” while DC37 leadership, who endorsed him as part of a ranked slate that includes City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams and Brooklyn State Sen. Zellnor Myrie, has stuck by their anti-traditional Medicare stance. Cuomo, who ranks first in the polls, has said such a change is “not a viable option,” and cited a court ruling in favor of the retirees.
