It started (at least in the public eye) with Trump designating Haiti as a “—-hole” nation, along with other countries whose population is overwhelmingly people of color. Ira Kurzban, a lawyer for the plaintiffs, said Trump’s statement during a presidential debate, that Haitians were eating cats and dogs, was “bizarre, terribly racist.” Now, as part of his anti-immigrant agenda, the administration is actively attempting to permanently revoke TPS, or Temporary Protected Status, for several nations, one of which is Haiti, with over 521,000 immigrants living here. 32BJ of the SEIU is getting behind a suit in an effort to preserve TPS for over 200,000 of them. The 11 plaintiffs in the suit, include nine Haitian immigrants along with 32BJ, in the lawsuit titled “Haitian Evangelical Clergy Association v. Trump.” One of the Haitian plaintiffs in the case, 32BJ member Gerald Michaud, has been described by the president of 32BJ, Manny Pastreich, as someone who has “changed the lives of thousands of members.”
