President Lee Saunders of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) delivered a speech on Jan. 14 paying tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The remarks were delivered at the Los Angeles Federation of Labor’s Martin Luther King Day Breakfast. Saunders said Dr. King was “an unshakeable ally of the trade union movement,” and linked labor rights and civil rights. Saunders also spoke of how Dr. King joined an AFSCME-represented strike in 1968 in Tennessee by Black sanitation men.
