In an unconscionable move, Gov. Greg Abbott of Texas has signed a bill eliminating water breaks for construction workers. Previously, by law, they were only given 10 minutes every four hours to drink and cool off. The heat in Texas has become ever more intense, and the taxing manual labor these workers must do outdoors has already resulted in numerous deaths. In fact, Texas has the highest rate of heat-related workplace deaths. His action demonstrates not only a complete lack of empathy, but one could even say a plantation owner’s mentality.
