The Bessemer, Alabama Amazon union drive received national attention when its anti-union tactics such as mandatory “captive audience” meetings, and its interference in union voting were exposed. The meetings portray unions as bad for workers and create an atmosphere of fear among those who want to vote for a union. Recently, Jennifer Bates, lead worker spokeswoman of the Bessemer drive was terminated by Amazon while she was struggling with serious injuries caused by her job. Bates, however, was reinstated after filing an Unfair Labor Practice charge against the mega-corporation, striking a blow for the union voice in a seemingly impenetrable wall.
