Today, we celebrate the life, legacy, and extraordinary contributions of F. Christophe “Chris” Silvera—a devoted labor leader, tireless advocate for working people, and a man whose impact will be felt for generations to come.
Chris dedicated his life to the labor movement and to the workers he proudly represented. As Secretary-Treasurer and Principal Officer of Teamsters Local 808 in Long Island City, he served with distinction for more than three decades. Taking office in January 1990, Chris was repeatedly re-elected by the membership he so faithfully served, becoming the longest-serving principal officer in the International Brotherhood of Teamsters.
Throughout his remarkable career, Chris was never afraid to stand up for what he believed was right. His leadership during the historic Metro-North labor dispute demonstrated his unwavering commitment to workers and their families. While others may have criticized his determination, Chris understood that meaningful change often requires courage, conviction, and sacrifice. His efforts helped secure significant improvements in wages, benefits, and working conditions for countless workers.
Chris was a champion not only for his own members, but for working people everywhere. Under his leadership, Teamsters Local 808 became known as a strong and fearless voice in the labor movement. He fought tirelessly for fairness, dignity, and economic justice, always ensuring that workers had a seat at the table and a voice that could not be ignored.
His influence extended far beyond New York. In 1999, Chris became the first chairman of the Teamsters National Black Caucus to be elected directly by its membership. In that role, he helped elevate the voices of Black workers across the country and strengthened the connection between the labor movement and the broader fight for civil rights and social justice.
Chris also played a significant role in national movements advocating for workers’ rights and economic equality. Whether speaking out against policies that harmed working families or organizing alongside fellow labor leaders, he never lost sight of the people he served. His activism was driven by a deep belief that every worker deserves respect, opportunity, and the ability to provide for their family with dignity.
Among his many accomplishments, Chris successfully negotiated groundbreaking agreements that protected workers facing economic uncertainty, ensuring that families received extended healthcare coverage, enhanced pensions, and critical support during difficult transitions. He understood that behind every contract was a family depending on the outcome.
Yet beyond his titles, accomplishments, and accolades, Chris will be remembered for something even greater—his passion, his determination, and his unwavering belief in people. He inspired those around him to stand taller, fight harder, and never back down from defending what is right.
Today, we honor a leader, a mentor, a friend, and a brother. We honor a man whose life’s work improved the lives of countless workers and whose legacy will continue to inspire future generations of labor activists and leaders.
Though Chris may no longer be with us, his voice, his spirit, and his commitment to justice will live on in every worker who stands up for fairness, every union member who fights for dignity, and every leader who follows in his footsteps.
May we remember him not only for what he accomplished, but for the values he embodied: courage, integrity, solidarity, and service.
Rest in peace, Chris. Your work is done, but your legacy will endure forever.
