SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University in Brooklyn is at severe risk of closure, after a Jan. 16 announcement by SUNY Chancellor John B. King Jr. in January. The “safety net” hospital would lose its building and become simply a wing in Kings County Hospital Center. SUNY Downstate is a public teaching hospital, and treats ALL patients, including those who can’t pay for care. In response, United University Professions, (UUP), which represents faculty and professional staff of the SUNY system, is holding a rally on Feb. 29 at the facility.
