David Huerta, president of the Service Employees International Union California (SEIU) sustained a head injury and was detained by federal agents when he was observing and documenting ICE operations on June 7th. ICE agents were in the midst of conducting raids in downtown L.A. at the time, and hundreds of people were protesting the ongoing series of ICE raids earlier that day. At least 44 people were detained as the demonstrators clashed with law enforcement, and ICE agents used pepper spray and smoke grenades to disperse the protestors. Huerta was charged with a felony. Although some government officials, high profile X users posting on the site, and widely popular political commentators accused Huerta of “getting in the face of law enforcement”. Gov. Gavin Newson and top SEIU officials defended the union president, and Senator Sasha Renee Perez, (D-Pasadena), calling for his release, said, “The reign of terror and merciless attacks on our immigration communities by the Trump Administration must stop.” Huerta was released on a $500,000 bond on June 9th.
