Across New York City, as well as at other Starbucks locations across the country, hundreds of stores were targeted for protests on Monday, Aug. 7. At 200 stores in NYC alone, people seeking to raise their voices against the corporation’s union-busting practices showed up in the rain. Dubbed ‘A Day of Action,’ frustrations over the company’s illegal attempts to quash any unionization attempts were heard from both those in other unions and former employees. Alex Iwinski, a WGA union council member and New York State Assemblyman Alex Bores, District 73 were present, along with former employee, Riley Fell, who said she couldn’t make it there after her hours were cut. NYC Comptroller Brad Lander is now calling for an independent investigation into Starbucks’ labor practices.
