UPS workers won a clause in their most recent contract mandating heat protection by having air conditioning inside of their trucks. Now imagine the broiling temperatures that workers face in such places as Eastern California to Nevada, or the notorious Death Valley National Park. It is known as the hottest place in North America, with temperatures as high as 130 degrees. Park rangers are on the job in such areas, to help the public with the possibilities they face of heat-related illnesses and death. However, thanks to DOGE’s continued and compassionless slashing of federal workers, 13% or about 2,500 of the National Park Services staff took buyouts or early retirement, just as have a high percentage of the mass of federal workers recently fired. More Perfect Union, a nonprofit labor advocacy organization, is trying to bring attention to this issue by placing around 300 billboards across Arizona, Nevada, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Florida, warning that un-elected Elon Musk’s cost-cutting measures could jeopardize public safety.
