George Clooney, Susan Sarandon, and Mark Ruffalo are just a few of the famous actors who are speaking out or walking the picket lines in support of the SAG-AFTRA strike. Both the actors’ union and members of the Writers Guild of America are now on strike together, a development that hasn’t happened in 63 years. Issues at stake include more base pay and residuals, as well as the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) and its consequences for workers in the entertainment industry. Disney CEO Bob Iger said the actors’ demands “are just not realistic,” while former Paramount CEO Barry Diller tried to make it appear that both unions were simply hurting themselves, since if they extend the strike there would be no money left when they were ready to settle, due to the shutdown of programming their actions would ultimately cause.
