Workers at the New York City Hispanic Museum and Library, also known as the Hispanic Society, located in Washington Heights, went on strike “indefinitely” on Monday, March 27. They are still without a contract nearly 1.5 years after organizing with UAW Local 2110. The small staff of about 20 people have had their benefits slowly stripped away by the administration. One employee said there had been a “verbal agreement” between workers and management that staff would accept lower wages than they could earn at comparable institutions because of the benefits. But now pensions have been axed and the free health care is on the chopping block. UAW Local 2110 represents workers at a range of cultural institutions including the Brooklyn Museum, the Whitney, and the Guggenheim.
