On Thursday, July 13, scores of union carpenter workers and elected officials rallied outside City Hall. Chants and speeches voicing outrage were directed at the New York City Economic Development Corporation (EDC) regarding its practice of allowing contractors to employ non-union workers in constructing Willets Point, a development project in Queens, NY that has been decades in the making. While touting progressive values such as fostering diversity and bringing economic opportunity to an undeserved community, the EDC has ironically turned its back on union workers. They had promised in their Request For Proposal to pay the prevailing wage and hire workers from state-certified apprenticeship programs.
