District-Council 37 (DC 37) has ramped up its ugly effort to push city retirees off the traditional Medicare they were promised decades ago and onto the for-profit Medicare Advantage plan, largely seen by the retirees as inferior in a multitude of ways. The 250,000 retirees rely on the current no-fee traditional Medicare and supplemental insurance. DC 37 is now withdrawing any donations to City Council members who do not support the switch. DC 37’s executive director, Harry Garrido, promised that “Money, endorsements – everything,” would be withdrawn from them along with a host of other previous supports. City officials have been trumpeting as a justification for the switch that it would save the city hundreds of millions of dollars each year, yet those numbers only make up 0.5 percent of the city budget.
