New York Times columnist and PBS NewsHour’s co-commentator David Brooks, who has been a constant contributing presence in the dwindling intellectual life of the United States for decades, much of it from a conservative perspective, has come out with a call to take down Donald Trump. He has literally called for a “mass uprising” against the President, writing in an opinion piece in the New York Times in April, that “modern civilization is buttressed by several pillars, including Constitutions to restrain power, international alliances to promote peace, legal systems to peacefully settle disputes, scientific institutions to cure disease, news outlets to advance public understanding, charitable organizations to ease suffering, businesses to build wealth and spread prosperity, and universities.” Trump threatens all of this, writes Brooks, since he is only interested in amassing power. Following that logic, Trump’s attacks and threats against an array of workers, including unions, journalists, scientific researchers, teachers, immigrant workers, judges, and many others, are finally pushing some prominent figures to sound an alarm.
