The Coalition of Black Trade Unionists (CBTU) has been in action since 1972, and now, decades later, is raising its collective voice against what President Terry Melvin calls a “racist, anti-democratic America.” Speaking at the CBTU 2023Convention the week of May 22, Melvin warned about the direction the country is going in and said there is an urgent need to prevent the election of Republican presidential candidates Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and Donald Trump. “A paranoid minority wants us silenced everywhere except a stage or on a basketball court.” “[There is an assault on] our Black presence on this soil which is saturated with the blood of our ancestors,” he added. DeSantis is also attacking unions by passing the so-called “paycheck protection law,” prohibiting unions from automatically collecting dues via payrolls deductions, even with the worker’s consent.
