Men’s Health Month – Move More Together!

“You don’t have to run marathons to be a man in motion. Every step you take is a step toward strength.”

When we talk about men’s health, exercise often feels like the elephant in the room. Most of us know we should be more active—but between long shifts, family responsibilities, and life’s curveballs, who has time?

The truth? You don’t need a gym membership, six-pack abs, or a perfect routine to make movement part of your life. You just need to start—and you don’t have to do it alone.

Why Union Men Need to Get Moving

Men in labor often work physically demanding jobs, but the reality is that “active at work” isn’t the same as being healthy. Repetitive strain, long hours on your feet, or sitting behind the wheel for 10 hours a day can still take a toll on your heart, joints, and mental health.

Movement helps with:

  • Lowering blood pressure
  • Managing weight and blood sugar
  • Boosting energy and mood
  • Improving sleep and reducing stress
  • Preventing injury

Just 20–30 minutes of movement a day—even walking—can make a massive difference. That’s it. That’s the bar. And you don’t have to do it alone.

Breaking Down the Barriers

Let’s call it like it is—plenty of men avoid exercise because:

  • “I don’t have time.”
  • “I’m too out of shape.”
  • “I’ll start next month.”

Sound familiar? Don’t let perfection get in the way of progress.

Start small. A walk around the block after dinner. Stretching before work. A weekend bike ride with the kids. It’s not about going from couch to CrossFit—it’s about showing up, day by day, for your own well-being.

And here’s a tip: find a buddy.

Union Brotherhood Can Keep You Moving

One of the greatest strengths of the labor movement is our unity. So why not bring that into our health?

  • Start a 30-day step challenge at your union hall
  • Get a few coworkers to commit to a lunchtime walk
  • Host a weekend pickup basketball or softball game
  • Form a walking crew before or after shifts

Support doesn’t just make fitness more fun—it makes it stick.

Union Leaders—Create a Culture of Movement

If you’re in a leadership position, consider small ways to make physical activity a normal part of union life. Announce group walks. Share member success stories. Invite wellness speakers. Offer incentives for participation.

Wellness is a workplace issue—and leadership can light the way.

This Isn’t About Vanity. It’s About Vitality.

You’re not moving to look good on social media. You’re moving to stay alive. To feel better. To stay strong for your crew, your family, your union.

So take that first step. Then another. And another. Together, we move forward.

Stronger men. Stronger unions. Stronger lives. This Men’s Health Month, make movement your mission.

You’ve carried a lot on your shoulders—now carry yourself a little further.
