Mike Koebel is a fourth-generation Steamfitter, Marine Corps veteran, and dedicated labor leader whose career has been built on a foundation of service, leadership, and commitment to others. With more than a decade of experience in the field and years of service in union leadership, Mike has distinguished himself as both a skilled tradesman and a passionate advocate for working men and women.
After graduating from high school in 1999, Mike answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Marine Corps. Following Recruit Training and Marine Combat Training, he served with distinction during Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. Throughout his military career, Mike demonstrated exceptional leadership and professionalism, earning meritorious promotions from Lance Corporal to Corporal and ultimately to Sergeant.
His exemplary military service was recognized with numerous awards and commendations, including two Meritorious Medals, two Navy Unit Commendations, three Letters of Appreciation, the Good Conduct Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, and the Iraq Campaign Medal.
Upon returning home in 2005, Mike began a new chapter through the Helmets to Hardhats program, joining Steamfitters Local 638 and continuing a proud family tradition in the trade. He completed the apprenticeship program in 2007 and quickly earned the respect of his fellow members through his work ethic, leadership, and dedication to the union.
As his career progressed, Mike took on increasing responsibilities within Local 638. He served as a Shop Steward, was elected to the Finance Board, served on the Executive Board, and was appointed Business Agent in 2021. His commitment to representing and advocating for union members ultimately led to his election as Financial Secretary-Treasurer of Steamfitters Local 638, a position that reflects the confidence and trust his fellow members have placed in his leadership.
Whether serving his country overseas or fighting for the interests of working families at home, Mike has remained committed to the values of integrity, service, and brotherhood. His journey from Marine Sergeant to union leader exemplifies the strength of veterans in the labor movement and the opportunities created through programs such as Helmets to Hardhats.
Today, Mike continues to lead by example, honoring both his military service and his union heritage while working to build a stronger future for the members of Steamfitters Local 638 and their families.
