Mamdani Administration Announces Construction Safety Committee

Labor representatives expected to participate in new advisory panel

The Mamdani administration announced plans to establish a Committee on Construction Safety that officials say will examine ways to reduce injuries and fatalities in New York City’s construction industry.

According to City Hall, the committee is expected to begin meeting in fall 2026 and will review factors contributing to workplace accidents, evaluate existing safety measures and consider recommendations related to enforcement, accountability and worker protections.

The committee is expected to include representatives from labor organizations, construction workers, city agencies and industry professionals.

In a statement announcing the initiative, Mayor Zohran Mamdani said the administration intends to pursue housing development goals while maintaining a focus on worker safety.

Department of Buildings Commissioner Ahmed Tigani said city officials are seeking to balance increased housing production with construction-site safety measures.

“We have a desperate need for more housing supply,” Tigani said. “But in order to have the trust of the people who are going to be affected by that development, we need to demonstrate that we are going to hold firm on the protections that are in place.”

According to city officials, the committee may also examine how emerging technologies, including safety-monitoring systems and digital construction tools, could help reduce workplace hazards.

City data cited by officials indicate that construction-site injuries declined in 2025 compared with previous years, while construction-related fatalities increased. Falls remained a leading cause of fatal incidents, according to the city’s construction safety reporting.

Officials said the committee is also expected to review issues related to worker training, mental health, language access and workplace safety education.

The Department of Buildings has expanded outreach efforts aimed at informing workers about safety regulations and enforcement procedures, including multilingual educational campaigns, according to agency officials.

Tigani said labor organizations and worker advocates are expected to play an important role in the committee’s work, although specific participants have not yet been announced.

City officials said additional details regarding the committee’s membership, scope and recommendations are expected to be released at a later date.
