Schedule a Check-Up – The Strongest Move You Can Make

Kerri O’Brien | June 2025

“Real strength isn’t just showing up for the job—it’s showing up for your health.”

When you’ve spent your life working hard—on job sites, in transit yards, firehouses, classrooms, or city halls—it’s easy to think strength is just physical. But the strongest move a man can make? Taking care of his health.

For Men’s Health Month, we’re starting with something simple but powerful: scheduling a check-up.

Why Men Skip It—and Why You Shouldn’t

Too many union men skip annual check-ups. Why?

  • “I’m too busy.”
  • “I feel fine.”
  • “I don’t want to hear bad news.”
  • “I’ll get to it later.”

These thoughts are normal—but dangerous. Many of the biggest threats to men’s health—like high blood pressure, diabetes, and even cancer—don’t show symptoms early. By the time they do, the damage is often done.

Getting a check-up doesn’t make you weak. It makes you smart. And it keeps you working longer, living stronger, and enjoying more time with your family, friends, and union brothers and sisters.

It’s Easier Than You Think

Most union health funds make check-ups quick and accessible. Many don’t even cost you a dime. Some even offer workplace screenings. Don’t wait for a scare. Make the call today:

  • Primary care doctor? Book the physical.
  • Haven’t had bloodwork in a while? Ask for it.
  • Over 40? Talk about prostate and heart screenings.

The earlier you know where you stand, the sooner you can take control.

Real Men Get Checked

We’ve seen too many good men ignore a small pain, skip a screening, or put their health on hold—only to face a crisis down the line. We’ve also seen the men who got checked, found something early, and got back to work stronger than ever.

Those are the stories we need to multiply this month.

Union Leaders—Lead the Way

If you’re a union leader, make it known: health check-ups are part of safety. Include it in your next meeting. Mention it in the newsletter. Get screened yourself and share that you did.

You don’t need to post your blood pressure on Instagram—you just need to set the tone.

Women—We Need You, Too

Sisters, partners, daughters—your voice matters. Give the men in your life a nudge. Remind them to take care of themselves. A quick reminder can lead to a life saved.

This Men’s Health Month, prove your strength by scheduling a check-up. Do it for your family. Do it for your brothers. Do it for yourself.

Make the call. Mark the date. Show up.
