In a similar move made under the Trump administration, when Elon Musk and DOGE offered thousands of federal workers a paltry buyout to voluntarily leave their jobs, or soon be fired, UPS is now attempting to follow in their footsteps. In August of 2023, a historic five-year agreement was reached between the Teamsters-represented UPS employees, and the multibillion-dollar company. It contained a slew of promises in their favor, including a shift of tens of thousands of part-time workers to full-time, and equipping vans with air conditioning, necessary in the summer broiling heat. That plan would leave most drivers without quality health insurance, and go directly against the UPS contract that promised to create more jobs. “UPS is trying to weasel its way out of creating good union jobs here in America by dangling insulting buyouts in front of Teamsters drivers. It is an illegal violation of our national contract,” said Teamsters General President Sean M. O’Brien.
