One of Trump’s attempts to sell the American public on his varied drastic changes to the country include his statements that a “golden age” of manufacturing is coming to the U.S., due to his new policies. One such major change is the enforcement of tariffs on other nations and products globally. However, critics say there are many realities which will be roadblocks to such aspirations. Automation, the increasing use of artificial intelligence, and other problems with the global supply chain will interfere, they say, and so the plan is unrealistic. Another negative for union workers in relation to the realities is companies increasingly moving their operations to the South, where right-to-work states proliferate. There are currently 26 such states. Chandra Childers, senior policy and economic analyst at the Economic Policy Institute, in April issued the results of research saying about the moves down South, “That’s part of the reason you’re getting these right-to-work laws, is they want to be able to keep wages lower, they want to be able to not have to provide as many benefits and deal with interference by public officials.”
