In Denver and Los Angeles, over 52,000 grocery workers are either striking or about to. It is no surprise to learn that they have been driven to these actions as a result of management disrespect, low pay and unfair labor practices. Their jobs are very demanding, whether handling heavy deliveries and stocking, and other requirements, to dealing with an increasingly belligerent public. Albertsons, Kroger, Safeway, Ralph’s and Vons are these laborers’ targets. They are represented by the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW). In some states, contracts have been successfully negotiated in that some conditions have improved, such as in Washington State, Dallas, Colorado. However, chronic understaffing and poverty wages are at the fore, while CEO’s across the board rake in millions.
