The Teamsters have been fighting against the use of autonomous vehicles without a human operator since companies have been advocating for and using such technology. Currently, a California Teamsters-backed bill, Assembly Bill AB33, which would require trained human operators in any autonomous vehicle (AV) used to deliver commercial goods to residences or businesses, has passed the Cal. Legislature’s lower chamber. Authored by Majority Leader Cecilia Aguiar-Curry, the union is now calling the next step to go forward, which would be for the state Senate to take up the bill. Aside from the concern that scores of workers would lose their jobs should the bill not pass, there is the reality that serious accidents have already occurred in these driverless AV’s. President Chris Griswold of Teamsters Joint Council 42 in Pomona, called the automated driving “dangerous, disastrous, and vastly inferior to a highly trained operator.”
