There was a time when simply the prestige of working in a revered cultural institution overrode considerations of inadequate pay and benefits. But those days are gone, at least for a growing number of workers. The latest cultural institution to unionize is the Please Touch Museum in Philadelphia, designed for children, where in March, 87% of employees voted to be represented by AFSCME Local 397 (District Council 47). The Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Penn Museum workers have already unionized, while similar wins for museum workers have occurred in Ohio, Chicago, and New York City, among other locations.
