In a Daily News Op-ed, Emily Eisner and Nathan Gusdorf, both of the Fiscal Policy Institute, an independent, nonpartisan think tank, sound a reminder to the New York State government and its citizens, beginning with the massive amounts of federal aid already pulled from New York State, with much more to come. In the Op-ed, they detail what has already been affected: mental health, public health, and flood protection, through federal executive action. Meanwhile, congressional Republicans are taking aim at Medicaid and food stamps, preparing to impose up to $2 trillion in federal budget cuts, which will affect the poor and elderly the most, another astonishing example of greed and lack of empathy from the administration. The authors of the Op-ed say that rather than just accept these changes and other draconian measures, lawmakers should be readying laws to protect working-class New Yorkers. They disagree with policies that are currently being put in play, even those coming directly from Gov. Hochul.
